Gastric banding surgery

It is a restrictive surgery (reducing the size of the stomach) using an adjustable gastric ring. The surgery reduces the volume of the stomach, therefore very small amounts of food make the patient feel full. Consequently, less calories are consumed with food. This is the least invasive technique of weight loss surgery. The surgery is performed using a laparoscope.

Gastric BandLaparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure enabling us to perform the surgery without any large incisions. Laparoscopic surgery leads to a more rapid return to everyday life, the period of disability after such procedure is significantly shoter, and the risk of postoperative compliations is smaller as compared with open surgery (laparotomy).

Laparoscopic surgery is performed under general anesthesia. A small incision is made near the umbilicus and a small laparoscopic video camera is placed through the incision into the abdominal cavity. A few additional small incisions are made for insertion of surgical instruments. Carbon dioxide is introduced into the abdominal cavity to create a work space for the surgeon. All surgical actions inside the abdominal cavity are performed observing the view on the monitor. A special ring is placed on the upper part of the stomach, in the area between the gastric cardia and body. The placed ring gives the stomach a sand-glass shape. Capacity of the upper part then totals about 100ml. The ring has a reservoir which is filled with saline. The reservoir is connected to a small capsule placed under the skin. The capsule allows postoperative band adjustment by injecting or removing some saline into / from it.

After the surgery patient‘s onetime food intake decreases significantly, because upper part of the stomach fills very quickly as the ringslows the passage of food to the lower part.

Gastric ring can stay in patient‘s organism for life. The ring may have to be replaced only if it loses hermeticity, position or other complications manifest due to particular reasons.

Complications

Possible complications specific to adjustable gastric banding surgery:

  • The most common complication – regurgitation of ingested food from the upper area of the stomach. To avoid it, the patient should eat small amounts of food per meal and every bite should be chewed slowly and properly. Large amounts of poorly chewed and unsuitable food may also cause obstruction of the passage from the upper to the lower part of the stomach.
  • Slip of the ring, dilation of the upper part of the stomach or the esophagus. This complication is possible in cases of non-adherence to postoperative recommendations.
  • Gastric erosion caused by the ring.
  • Local pain.
  • Infection of the fluid inside the ring.
  • Dilation of the subcutaneous capsule, local pain, deflection of the capsule.
  • Lack of particular nutrients, minerals or vitamins. To avoid such complications, well-balanced nutrition and food supplements are highly recommended postoperatively.
Efficiency

After this restrictive gastric surgery, patients lose an average of 0.5–1 kg per week. Patients with severe obesity usually lose more weight during the first weeks postoperatively. Consequently, average weight loss during the first postoperative year varies from 22 to 45 kilograms.

Studies show that this procedure helps patients develop better nutritional habits and thus maintain their optimal body mass for a long period of time.

Testimonials

.... I've tried almost every weight loss method available, I think! Last year I joined a weight club that encouraged us to live on powdered drinks as long as possible. I lost 15 kg quickly and was excited! I met my current husband and once again I began to indulge in good dinner. I gained 15 kg that I had lost before plus I put on additional 10 kg ... When I realized that the surgeon Almantas Maleckas is fluent in Swedish and has done over 1,000 gastric surgeries and is a professor of stomach / intestinal surgery and that the cost of the whole thing was about half of what it costs in Sweden, it was just a question of time for me before I landed on the operating table in Kaunas, Lithuania ... read more
